What a Great Rivers Alive Event!
This year’s Rivers Alive cleanup event was a huge success! We want to thank all our volunteers, our loyal groups, individuals, Scout troops, parents and our civic participants – we couldn’t do it without you. Over 300 volunteers, many seasoned volunteers, along with much welcomed newcomers, walked approximately 10 miles over Walton County, picking up 480 pounds of trash and debris. Items picked up included over 400 cigarette butts, over 300 food wrappers, 200 plastic drink bottles, over 100 aluminum drink cans plus over 600 food related items . We have two scout troops with a scheduled pick up in November and look forward to their adding to the totals of items littering our county
We always appreciate the support of our Sanitation Dept. and our Sheriff’s Dept. for assistance with safety and disposal. We couldn’t do what we do without them.

And Soon...RIVERS ALIVE!
Rivers Alive is held annually each fall and is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division's Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Program and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs' Keep Georgia Beautiful Program, in cooperation with Help the Hooch.
Georgia's 70,150 miles of streams and rivers need your help. Our waterways provide us with fresh drinking water, great recreational opportunities like canoeing and fishing, and they serve as a pleasant respite from our busy day to day lives. This is your opportunity to help protect one of our most precious resources. Help us clean our rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands by joining in support of Rivers Alive.
Thank you to our past volunteers who come from all walks of life - non-profit organizations, corporations, community and civic groups, school groups, faith-based groups, individuals, governmental agencies, and others.

Cooking, Cars, & their Connection
Here in the South we love our fried foods. We also love our cars. But how can they possibly be connected? Fried foods get a bad rap nowadays, but one of the positive benefits from frying -in addition to the wonderful taste we all can't get enough of - is fueling our vehicles. Honest! Now, don't try pouring your french fry oil into your car's gas tank, but you CAN do the next best thing: pour it into our used cooking oil container at the Recycling Center for further refinement into diesel fuel. Used cooking oil is an often overlooked source of recycling and reuse, and saves money, too, by not having to pay to dispose of it through your trash. It's a win-win and a no-brainer!

- The Flint River begins in a drainage ditch at the base of Hartsfield International Airport?
- Alabama, Florida and Georgia have been waging a 'water war' over how to share water from the Chattahoochee River since 1992?
- The Chattoochee River is the southernmost habitat for trout?

Volunteering
VOLUNTEERING AT KWB
Did you know that Keep Walton Beautiful has been around since 1980? Yessir, we've been around the block a few times! KWB depends on a wide variety of volunteers, organizations, schools and businesses throughout Walton County to assist with programs encouraging envirnomental education year round, and we need YOU!
Projects include THE GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP - now a year round effort that includes such events as neighborhood, road and river cleanups, school activities, document destruction and Earth Day. RIVERS ALIVE is held annually in the fall and focuses on cleaning up the county's rivers, lakes and streams. AMERICA RECYCLES DAY is held November 15 and involves public education of the benefits and methods of recycling. BEAUTIFICATION assists with landscaping area parks, schools and public locations, including Arbor Day. BRING ONE FOR THE CHIPPER, of course, is the Christmas Tree Recycling Program that takes place every January. There's a lot to do!
By volunteering with KWB, you can become an important part of improving our community and the quality of life for every Walton County citizen. It will save resources, money AND give you that warm, fuzzy feeling!
Give us a call at 770-267-1421 or check out our website at http://www.waltoncountyga.gov/KWB/KWB.html
